Second Saturday

Second Saturday

Second Saturday is a serving opportunity for Friendship & friends. Whether you’re an individual, family, or small group, you’re welcome to join us as we serve our Limestone County community. This opportunity comes around the second Saturday of every month, from 9 AM - Noon. Serving locations and tasks vary from month to month, so watch this page for updates and details about upcoming Second Saturdays.

For more information on Second Saturday, email celia@friendshipumc.org or call the church office.

The next Second Saturday Project:

Saturday, January 14, Friendship and friends will gather from 9:00 am-12:00 noon for a variety of family-friendly service projects. This Saturday there are 3 ways you can serve:

  1. Athens Convalescent Center: Join us as we provide games of Bingo and other entertainment to the residents at the Athens Convalescent Center.
  2. Backpack Blessings: We will be packing weekend meal bags for 65 children at Cowart Elementary School for the Backpack Blessings ministry.
  3. Childcare: Friendship's nursery provides childcare during 2nd Saturday for kids 5 and under, and we would love to have volunteers assist our teachers. If you are interested in serving in this area, please contact Lauren Hart, assistant nursery coordinator at lmmanry@yahoo.com.

All are welcome to participate! Come by yourself, with your family, or with your small group. Simply meet at Friendship at 9:00 am in the multi-purpose building ready to serve. Check this page for specifics as they become available. For more information, contact celia@friendshipumc.org.

On Saturday, July 11, we transported Quadplex residents to the laundromat, paid for their laundry, and provided a listening ear. We also set up a second reading lounge at the Quadplex, and held a bicycle repair clinic to repair some of the resident's only means of transportation.

On Saturday, June 11, we provided dollar car washes in the Athens and East Limestone communities. Participants were surprised to learn that "Dollar Car Wash" meant that they got a $1 bill along with a special gift card from Friendship's preschoolers. We were blessed to be a blessing to others.

On April 9, 2011 Friendship and friends served the residents of the QuadPlex, a housing complex just east of Athens State College on Hobbs St. Around 50 adults and youth spent four hours cleaning, painting, planting, and pruning. We set up a clothes closet, created a library/reading lounge, and served a meal to residents and volunteers.
